I’ve been in the Creative industry for over a decade now. I’ve started as a Junior Copywriter in a multinational advertising agency and moved up the ranks to become Creative Director. When I finally left the agency to experience what’s on the other side of the fence (I’m now a Director of Marketing Communications), I made sure that I bring all the learnings that I’ve accumulated from my agency experience with me. One nugget that I find extremely valuable is to never lose that creative spark – because it is that spark that would separate your communication from the clutter.
One big factor that ignites those creative juices is the office itself. It is where you spend the most of your day. With that said, here are some ways to make sure your workplace inspires creativity.
If you’re surrounded by ugliness, more often that not, your mood would also reflect ugliness. That’s basic human nature. So make sure that your office space breath life into your team, not suck it out of them.
One of my favorite parts of my job is the opportunity to pick the brains of the people I work with. Through brainstorming, you get to form and build ideas together with your team. Make sure that you have areas in the office wherein employees can move away from their desks to meet and discuss. Provide them with comfortable seating and some good lighting (psychologists claim that dim lighting actually encourages creativity) and let the great ideas flow.
No matter how fulfilling your job is there will still be times wherein you’ll feel stressed – and stress is the numero uno enemy of creativity. Having a game room or a space where employees can relax, recharge and have fun is a great way to make sure everyone’s creative juices are flowing. Any yes, sometimes the best ideas come when people are playing ping-pong (Yes, it happens.).
Employees don’t want to feel like they’re robots. If you feel constricted, then it’s hard to think outside-the-box. Set aside an area where people can actually be creative and express who they are (i.e. their own workstation). You can also save on purchasing artworks!
I’m happy to say that we at Certica Global have taken these principles to heart when we’ve built our office. We have an office that inspires people to create, to think differently and to come up with innovative solutions to challenges. And we’re more than happy to share this imaginative space with other Australian businesses looking to build a team here in Manila.
